Upcoming AOL Instant Messenger Features

Current AOL Instant Messenger features include a user directory and buddy chat capabilities, personalized news, and a Neighborhood Watch feature so you can disconnect when crank chatters contact you. You also can send personalized greetings from your Buddy List, forward a copy of your Buddy List to a friend, and add your own comments to an entry on your Buddy List. AIM 5.9 introduces You've Got Pictures, a new feature that allows you to store and share digital photos.

AIM with Wi-Fi Locator

Wi-Fi locator firm Skyhook, which relies on Wi-Fi beacons to provide a GPS-like service, now has deal with AOL. When downloading AOL Instant Messanger a free downloadable plug-in for AIM will come with it. This adds a buddy list grouping labeled “Near Me”, to show buddies in physical proximity; they can even be plotted on a map. Skyhook’s database now contains 16 million access points in Canada and in the US.

AIM Will Chat With ICQ

The next version of AOL Instant Messenger will allow users to communicate with ICQ users in a move that will bridge the gap between the company's two popular chat services. Currently, the beta client allows AIM users to add ICQ users to their "Buddy Lists," view when they are online and send them instant messages.
